Zimbabwe Pursuing Avocado and Blueberry Exports to China

April 22, 2024

According to a report from China’s Xinhua News Agency, Zimbabwe is striving to diversify its exports of agricultural products to China. In an interview with Xinhua, Allan Majuru, CEO of ZimTrade, stated that China is one of Zimbabwe’s foremost trading partners in terms of both exports and imports and that the southern African country is actively working to further bolster its exports of agricultural items. At present, Zimbabwe’s main exports to China include minerals and tobacco leaves.

On July 1, 2022, some Zimbabwean citrus fruits, namely, sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis), mandarins (Citrus reticulata), grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), lemons (Citrus limon), limes (Citrus aurantifolia) and bitter oranges (Citrus aurantium), became the first fruit items from Zimbabwe to be officially granted access to the Chinese market. By October 2023, Zimbabwe had successfully completed its inaugural citrus shipments to China, with over 40 containers delivered by the end of the year.

Zimbabwe is reported to be currently engaged in discussions with China concerning the export of avocados. Furthermore, the southern African country is aiming to further diversify its export portfolio to China with the addition of blueberries, pecans, chiles and sesame.

Data provided by the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe reveal that bilateral trade between the two countries surged to a record high of $3.12 billion in 2023, marking a substantial 29.9% increase from the previous year. Within that period, Zimbabwe exported goods worth $1.71 billion to China while importing $1.41 billion worth of goods from China.
