Apples (↓)
New Zealand supply, primarily Royal Gala and Jugala, continues to enter the market. The first South African Royal Beaut apples were also opened during week 10 at ¥280 (18 kg, #135s), which was below last year’s opening price and one week later. New Zealand Royal Gala, which accounts for 32% of openings over the past three weeks, decreased in price by an average of ¥30 compared with week 9, settling at an average of ¥272 (18 kg, various sizes). Cherries (→)
Regina now accounts for 82% of container openings in southern China over the past three weeks. While wholesale pricing remains low, there is little optimism as importers focus on finalizing returns to exporters. The 2024/25 season will ideally mark a turning point in how the cherry trade is managed in China and how alternative markets are approached if this lucrative commodity is to continue thriving.
Grapes (↓)
Peru currently dominates container openings in southern China (weeks 7–10); however, Australia is rapidly gaining market share at 29%. Overall pricing declined for Peruvian, Australian and Chilean grapes. Peruvian Sweet Globe traded in a wide price range depending on size profile and quality level, averaging ¥188 (7.3 kg). Autumn Crisp, notable for its crunch, size and sweetness, averaged ¥253 (7.3 kg). Australian Crimson declined by a further ¥25 per 9-kg carton, falling 16% below the same week of last season and considerably below 2023 levels. Nectarines (↑)
Chilean nectarine prices increased this week, with Garcica, Andesneccuatro, Majestic Pearl and Bright Pearl all showing improvement. Currently, Bright Pearl can be found at prices ranging from ¥110 to ¥140 (9 kg, various sizes) with an average value of ¥125. This is 8% lower than the same week of last season.
Plums (↑)
Sugar plum/D’Agen prices increased this week for 9-kg packs, bringing them much closer to last season’s values. Sugar plums and D’Agen account for 45% of southern China container openings since week 7, followed by Candy Red and Red Phoenix.
