Vietnam Sends First Shipment of Frozen Durians to China

April 01, 2025

According to Vietnamese media reports, on March 24, Nam Do Agricultural Products Joint Stock Company held a signing ceremony with its partner, Wanqian Industry (Yunnan) Co. Ltd. (万乾实业(云南)有限公司), after which a shipment of 24 metric tons of frozen durians bound for China departed from Nam Do’s plant in the district of Krong Pac, Dak Lak province.

As early as Aug. 19, 2024, China’s General Administration of Customs signed a phytosanitary protocol with Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the export of frozen Vietnamese durians to China. Seven months later, the first shipment has finally been sent.

Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, general manager of Nam Do, stated that following the signing of the protocol between China and Vietnam, the company swiftly began preparing products for export to the Chinese market. Drawing on its years of experience in the agricultural sector and strong relationships with longstanding partners, the company successfully exported the frozen durians.

It has been reported that Nam Do received its customs code for export on Feb. 28 and made thorough preparations for the event. The company consulted with partners in Thailand and Malaysia regarding their experience in exporting frozen durians to China and sent the products to a China-recognized testing center for inspection.

Ngo added that the company was aware of the current challenges surrounding durian exports to China. Consequently, Nam Do implemented strict measures to ensure that the products met Chinese requirements.

On the morning of March 24, before the frozen durians were loaded into containers bound for the border, Nam Do invited experts from a China-recognized testing center to take on-site samples and conduct the final inspections prior to shipment.

Nam Do is reportedly poised to capitalize on current market opportunities, further explore ways to expand production and strengthen its exports to the Chinese market.

Experts in the Vietnamese durian industry have noted that frozen durians carry higher added value compared with fresh durians. Vietnam’s frozen durians are primarily exported to markets such as Thailand, the United States and Europe, with annual revenues reaching several hundred million dollars. Given the strong demand for frozen durians in China, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association expects this segment to generate even greater revenue for the country.
