Xinjiang Fragrant Pears Exported to New Zealand for First Time

On March 28, 17 tons of Xinjiang fragrant pears were exported to New Zealand from Gaoming District in Foshan, Guangdong province, by Guangdong Zhongli Agricultural Group. This marks the first cross-border shipment of Xinjiang fragrant pears from Guangdong since the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world’s largest free trade area, officially came into effect on Jan. 1.

This batch of fragrant pears is one of a new series of campaigns from the “Yue Mao Xing” (粤贸行) industry service platform. This platform is intended to promote more products from Xinjiang to international markets amid deepening agricultural ties between Guangdong and Xinjiang provinces.

Fragrant pears from Korla in Xinjiang have been exported to Hong Kong as well as Singapore and other Southeast Asian markets since 1975, and they continue to sell well. China began exporting Korla fragrant pears to countries including Canada and Australia in the 1980s, before opening markets in the United States and Europe. At present, Korla fragrant pears are exported to more than 20 countries worldwide.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of fresh pears, producing more than two-thirds of the annual global supply. There are currently 212 regionally branded agricultural products related to the pear industry, including Korla pears, Xixian Yulu pears, Anshan Nanguo pears and Pucheng Su pears.

Between 2010 and 2020, China’s annual export volume of fresh pears increased from 440,000 tons to 540,000 tons, while the export value soared from $243.3 million to $667.7 million over the same period. Chinese pears are mainly exported to Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and other international markets.
