Philippines To Export $260 Million Worth of Durians to China

January 29, 2023

According to a statement from the Philippines Department of Agriculture, a handful of Chinese companies, including Dole (Shanghai) Fruits and Vegetables Trading Co. Ltd., Shanghai Goodfarmer Group, and Dashang Group, have already expressed their willingness to purchase Philippine durians, just weeks after China’s General Administration of Customs announced that the fruit would be permissible for import into China. The statement also indicates that the Philippines will export $260 million worth of durians to China, with the fruit originating from certified orchards in Davao City, Davao del Sur and North Cotabato.

Earlier this month, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines paid a state visit to China and met with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping on Jan. 4 in Beijing. During the meeting, the two countries reached an agreement in which China plans to buy $2.09 billion worth of fruit from the Philippines. Durians, an important commercial crop in the Philippines, gained official market access to China in the wake of the state visit.

The regional field offices of the Philippines Department of Agriculture will coordinate with the Bureau of Plant Industry and the High Value Crops Development Program to increase durian yields, ensure that varieties bound for China are appreciated by Chinese consumers, and assist in packaging and marketing. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Plant Industry will also extend its support to certified orchards and promote the implementation of good agricultural practices in the country.
