Peruvian Avocados See Strong Year Start in China

February 15, 2023

According to Juan Carlos Paredes Rosales, president of the Peruvian Hass Avocado Growers Association (ProHass), the total export volume of Peruvian avocados in 2023 is likely to reach double that in 2018, when the figure stood at 338,549 metric tons. Moreover, the avocado supply in 2023 should be more evenly distributed throughout the season, without large volumes being excessively concentrated in just a few short weeks. Total exports of the Hass variety in 2023 are forecast to reach 624,000 metric tons, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of 12.5%.

To reduce its reliance on trade with European countries, the association intends to diversify its exports this season by sending more shipments to the United States and Asian countries. It is anticipated that Peru will export at least 125,000 metric tons of avocados to the United States. Meanwhile, exports to Asia are expected to continue their upward trend. Paredes Rosales highlighted the huge potential of Asian markets and attached great importance to securing as many customers there as possible.

As of the fifth week of this year, Peru’s avocado exports totaled 7,149 metric tons, up by 11% over the same period of last year. Approximately 30% of these exports occurred in the fifth week, representing a 47% year-on-year increase. Key overseas markets so far this season have included the Netherlands, China and Russia. However, exports to the Netherlands dropped by 13% compared with the same period of last year, while shipments to Russia also witnessed a decline. Notably, exports to China doubled during this period, indicating a good start to the year for Peruvian avocados on the Chinese market.

As of 2022, Peru boasted an avocado planting area of 60,091 hectares. However, because many trees have not yet entered the fruit-bearing stage, the country’s avocado output is expected to exhibit further growth in the years to come.
