Back to topFirst Official Shipment of Cambodian Longans to China Reaches Guangzhou
The first official shipment of Cambodian longans to China—weighing in at 338 metric tons—successfully cleared customs at Guangzhou’s Nansha Port on Nov. 15, according to media reports.
The thirteen containers of fresh longans were exported by the Cambodian subsidiary of a Chinese fruit distributor, Chongqing Jinguoyuan Industrial Company, Limited. On the morning of Oct. 27, a launch ceremony attended jointly by high-level officials from Cambodia and China was held in the capital city Phnom Penh to celebrate this new milestone in the growth of bilateral agricultural trade between the two countries. Later, the products departed by sea from Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, bound for Guangzhou. It is reported that Jinguoyuan will bring approximately 11,000 metric tons of Cambodian longans into China during the current season, with volumes expected to exceed 20,000 metric tons next year.
Longans have become the third Cambodian agricultural product to gain market access to China this year, following Basa fish and corn. They are Cambodia’s third type of fresh fruit permissible for import into China after bananas and mangos. Cambodian longans are often referred to as Pailin longans. However, Pailin longans are not only grown in Pailin province. Their cultivation has also extended to the neighboring province of Battambang. In 2021, Cambodia’s planting area for longans was over 18,000 hectares with a yield of 131,000 metric tons.
To date, 74 orchards and 8 packaging plants in Cambodia have been approved by China’s General Administration of Customs to deal with longan exports to China.
