Camposol and Pengsheng Launch This Season’s First Shipment of Peruvian Blueberries in Hubei

August 20, 2024

On Aug. 20, Shanghai Pengsheng Industrial Co. Ltd., one of China’s leading blueberry importers, and Camposol, the largest agricultural company in Peru and a major grower of blueberries and avocados, jointly hosted a launch ceremony for this season’s first shipment of Camposol Peruvian blueberries at the Shouheng City Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market, located in Hubei province and serving as a key fruit wholesale hub for central China. In addition to blueberries, Camposol has successfully exported various other fruits to China, including cherries from the company’s orchards in Chile.

The event was attended by Bernardo Munoz, commercial counselor of the Consulate General of Peru in Shanghai; Xiang Haiying, vice chairman of the Xiaonan District Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in the city of Xiaogan; Xia Baoguo, a member of the Xiaonan District Party Committee; Luis Miguel Baanante, general manager of Camposol China; Li Li and Liu Jie, deputy general managers of Xiaogan Shouheng Agricultural and Sideline Products Company; Deng Lingjun, senior partner at Shanghai Pengsheng Industrial Co. Ltd.; Bian Zhennan, head of the international procurement department at Shanghai Pengsheng Industrial Co. Ltd.; Sun Jun, Xiaogan market manager at Shanghai Pengsheng Industrial Co. Ltd.; and Qi Zhenguo, executive president of the Shouheng City Fruit Circulation Association.

Owing to the impact of the El Niño phenomenon last season, the overall blueberry harvest in Peru was delayed. In conjunction with shipping problems, this delay has caused this season’s first shipment of blueberries to arrive a month later than in previous years.

In response, the Camposol team took proactive measures, such as carefully selecting high-quality blueberries with excellent firmness and a crisp texture, specifically catering to the preferences of the Chinese market, to ensure that the fruit maintains an optimal shelf life after reaching retailers. Furthermore, Camposol’s blueberry variety development program has entered its eighth year and varietal replacement is now underway. By 2025, the company is expected to have 300 hectares of new varieties. These new varieties are not only better suited to the local climate, thus extending the blueberry production season, but also produce larger, crisper and sweeter fruit more resilient to long-distance transportation. As a result, the supply to the Chinese market will be greater and more stable. In addition, with the first phase of the Chancay Port Terminal project in Peru set to be completed in November, the shipping time of Peruvian blueberries to China will soon be reduced by approximately 10 days.

The recent arrival represents the first shipment of Camposol blueberries to China in the 2024/25 season, with a total of 7,800 cartons. After years of close collaboration, Pengsheng’s multichannel distribution capabilities have earned Camposol’s trust. In addition to physical supermarkets, Pengsheng has expanded its distribution network to include online platforms such as Metro, Yonghui Superstores, Freshippo, Huiyou Mart, JD.com and Dingdong Maicai. Even prior to the arrival of the shipment, most of the blueberries had already been pre-ordered by chain retailers such as Jinguoyuan, Jiayijia, Xianfeng Fruit and Shine Orchard. Some of the blueberries will also be sold at the Shouheng City Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market.

Domestic demand for blueberries in China has continued to grow rapidly in recent years. Camposol’s goal is to deeply penetrate second- and third-tier cities, targeting middle-income consumers with blueberries that are consistently high in quality and feature a long shelf life. The Shouheng City Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market, located just 60 kilometers from the provincial capital of Wuhan, is the largest fruit and vegetable wholesale market in central China. Camposol noted that Wuhan’s strategic geographical location and strong transportation infrastructure align with its market development strategy, making the city a key hub for its expansion throughout central China.

This marks the first time that Pengsheng and Camposol have held a new season launch ceremony in Hubei province, reflecting their response to market and customer demand. By using Wuhan as a distribution hub for the central China region, Camposol aims to continue to strengthen its presence on the Chinese blueberry market.

Founded in 2017, Camposol’s China branch initially targeted the mainland China market and aimed to expand gradually across Asia. Today, Camposol is a major importer of fresh fruits from the Southern Hemisphere to China, specializing in blueberries, avocados, cherries, table grapes, mangos and mandarins. It is particularly worth mentioning that Camposol’s own cherries grown in Chile have successfully entered the Chinese market. These cherries are typically available every November and December, allowing them to take advantage of the early part of China’s sales season for imported cherries.

As a long-term partner of Camposol, Pengsheng is set to import approximately 450 containers of Peruvian blueberries this season. Despite a reduction in the supply of Peruvian blueberries early in the season, Pengsheng still expects to achieve at least a 20% increase in imports compared with last season.
