“Washington Grown”: All about Washington Apples

October 12, 2017

In the spring of 2017, the Washington Apple Commission (WAC) worked with the Spokane-based production company North By Northwest to film a number of segments for an episode of the television show Washington Grown. The series features Washington agricultural products, shares with viewers “behind the scenes” footage of the growing and production process, and visits a local restaurant in each episode to prepare a tasty dish using the featured ingredients. This marks this fifth season of the series, which was funded by a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the WSDA with a small match from each participating cooperator.

In this episode highlighting Washington apples, viewers will accompany the host on a visit to Legacy Orchard in East Wenatchee, where Scott McDougall of McDougall & Sons explains the pollination process. The host also chats with Bruce Barritt, the breeder behind Washington’s newest apple variety, the Cosmic Crisp, from a newly-planted Cosmic Crisp orchard. The crew learns a bit about the history of Washington State and the apple industry with a visit to the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center, then wraps up the day with a trip to the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival, where the hosts meet with Wenatchee’s own Apple Blossom Queen. The episode will also feature Bon Vino restaurant in Sunnyside, where they cooked up a red wine apple gremolata with caramel apple butter carrots, and BeanFish food truck in Seattle for a taste of artisanal Japanese Taiyaki apple pie.
