Hainan Durian Growers Achieve First Off-Season Harvest

February 13, 2025

Hainan’s durian growers have recently made another breakthrough in cultivation technology. Grand Agriculture, a fruit company based in the city of Qionghai in eastern Hainan, has achieved an off-season harvest for the first time, after previously introducing a new durian variety from Thailand’s Chanthaburi province. During the second flowering season, this new variety successfully bore fruit.

The new durian cultivar — known as 帕塔南 (Patanan) in Chinese — boasts a well-rounded size and shape, with an oval and plump appearance and each fruit weighing over 2.5 kilograms. The ripe durians possess a strong aroma, with thick, soft and creamy flesh. The cultivar also features a high flesh yield and sugar content.

This breakthrough in cultivation has overcome the seasonal limitations of Hainanese durians, allowing consumers to enjoy fully ripe domestic durians during the Chinese New Year holiday.

According to Grand Agriculture, the company will continue to monitor the growth performance of the new variety at its Qionghai production base, with the expectation that it will be made available on the market during the off-season period for durians grown in Sanya and Ledong.
