Shortly after Chilean fresh fruit was officially allowed to be imported into China by combined sea and air shipments with transshipment in a third country, Dalian Yidu Group succeeded in bringing in three shipments of Chilean cherries via this mode in December. In order to get a first-hand account of the combined deliveries, Produce Report spoke with several people involved.

Affected by the sharp drop in domestic garlic prices, the export value of garlic dropped sharply in 2018, while the total volume remained stable. China's garlic export quantity and price showed an inverse correlation in 2018. Exports of garlic and garlic products are also being held back by a lack of technology and processing capacity.

The new Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Law, which was passed in August by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) of China, came into force on the first day of January. It is China’s first comprehensive soil pollution prevention and restoration legislation.

One major difference so far in this year’s Chilean cherry season compared to previous years is the frequency of arrivals of ocean shipments. Last year, there was generally one arrival per week carrying a very large volume of cherries. This year, in addition to the fastest Hamburg Sud “charter” vessels arriving weekly from Valparaiso Chile to Hong Kong, there are also shipments coming on vessels operated by Hapag Lloyd and Evergreen.
