Season’s First Shipment of Jingold’s Chilean Kiwifruit Reaches China

May 19, 2020

This content is sponsored by Jingold, the Italian kiwifruit brand that was founded in 2012 by producers and retailers to promote the yellow-fleshed kiwifruit variety Jintao.

This year’s Chilean kiwifruit season is now underway. In addition to the conventional green-fleshed Hayward variety that accounts for the majority of kiwifruit production both in Chile and abroad, yellow-fleshed kiwifruit varieties have risen to prominence in recent years. In particular, over 90% of Chile’s yellow-fleshed kiwifruit exports to China last season were of the Jintao cultivar sold under the Jingold brand. Since the late 1990s, Jintao has become a world-renowned variety with numerous beneficial features that make it especially suitable for commercial production, and its cultivation has been spread by Jingold to multiple locations around the globe, including Italy, Chile, Portugal, Argentina and South Africa.

A representative of Jingold (Shanghai) Fruits and Vegetables Trading Co. Ltd., Jingold’s branch office in China and the sole importer of its products, told Produce Report that this year’s first shipment of Jintao kiwifruit from Chile arrived in Guangzhou on May 2 with superior overall quality compared to last season.

According to data released by China Customs, Chile’s kiwifruit exports to China in 2019 witnessed a 33% increase over the previous year. In this context, Jingold’s Chilean kiwifruit also made excellent progress on the Chinese market in 2019, with the export volume to China registering 40% growth.

Owing to a drought, Jingold’s harvest of Chilean kiwifruit this season is expected to be roughly equivalent to last season’s, as is the export volume to China. However, the dry matter content of this season’s fruit is higher, which translates to greater Brix levels, sweeter kiwifruit and ultimately happier customers. As its sales channels in China are becoming more stable and diversified, Jingold is increasingly able to realize rapid distribution of its products according to the quality requirements and specifications of buyers. The company also revealed to Produce Report that its top priorities in 2020 will be further promoting the brand and working with distributors to ripen the fruit.

The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic has cast a shadow over every aspect of life around the world this year, and Chile is also having to grapple with this tough situation. After implementing efforts to guarantee the health of its staff and safety of its products, Jingold has resumed operations in Chile and set up additional working teams to ensure on-time delivery.

Owing to their high levels of vitamin C and various touted health benefits, kiwifruits have become a hot commodity in a number of global markets during this challenging period. For example, China’s kiwifruit imports in the first two months of 2020 totaled 6,602 tons, corresponding to a 51% year-on-year increase. As a result of the bright market prospects and its sound business network, Jingold expects that the pandemic will not hamper its sales in China this season.
