Frozen Peruvian Avocados, Blueberries and Mangos Nearing China Market Access

July 25, 2024

According to a Peruvian media report, Ángel Manero Campos, head of Peru’s Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, has stated that the South American country is preparing to export frozen fruits such as avocados, blueberries and mangos to China. These frozen fruits are primarily targeted at the catering, hotel and supermarket sectors.

In addition to these frozen fruits, Manero mentioned that China Customs will also grant market access to fresh Peruvian pomegranates and pecans this year. The head of China’s General Administration of Customs is scheduled to visit Peru in September to sign the relevant agreements.

The total export value of Peruvian agricultural products to China has now reached $450 million, with an annual growth rate of approximately 10% and fresh fruit alone currently accounting for $300 million of this total. Furthermore, China and Peru recently signed an agreement allowing fresh Peruvian grapes to be sent to China by air. Airfreighted grapes are fresher and can hit the shelves within just two days, enabling them to compete on the high-end market. Additionally, China will also give the green light to imports of Peruvian horse and donkey meat and hides.

Manero also emphasized the importance of Peru’s upcoming Chancay Port Terminal, set to be completed in November, stating that it will reduce shipping costs for agricultural products by 30%, equivalent to a reduction of $2,000–3,000 per container. Furthermore, the new mega port should shorten the shipping time to China from 28 days to 16 days, which is crucial for perishable products.

Peru hopes that after the Chancay Port Terminal begins operations, agricultural exports can return to the previous annual growth rate of 15–20%. Manero concluded that the European agricultural market is nearly saturated, with annual growth of only 3–4%, while Peru’s exports to China could maintain a growth rate of 10–15%, or even 20%, for a long time.
