Xinhua News Agency has reported that the Dongxing–Móng Cái border crossing between China and Vietnam has been reopened to the flow of people and goods since Jan. 10, 2022. Local residents living on the two sides of the border have also been allowed to resume the trade of agricultural goods in small quantities through the crossing.
Owing to concerns over COVID-19 transmission, the Dongxing–Móng Cái border crossing suspended operations on Dec. 21, 2021, thus placing additional pressure on other ports of entry. Chinese and Vietnamese customs authorities had been engaged in talks since Jan. 3, 2022, to resume operations at the earliest opportunity.
According to Vietnamese media, thousands of trucks were still waiting to enter China at the Friendship Pass, the Puzhai–Tan Thanh border crossing and the Aidian–Chi Ma border crossing as of Jan. 5, 2022. Most of these trucks were carrying seasonal fruits such as dragon fruit, jackfruit, durians, mangos and melons. As a result of the long waiting times, many of the more perishable fruits went bad before reaching China and could only be sold locally at very low prices or had to be abandoned.
To relieve the severe congestion, Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has advised local companies to use rail or sea services to transport goods to China where possible.
