11 Tons in 2 Weeks: A Great Start for Ecuadorian Yellow Dragon Fruit in China

April 26, 2023

Data from Ecuador’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock indicate that the South American country has exported 17 batches of yellow dragon fruit to China in just two weeks, totaling 4,573 cartons or 11,432.5 kilograms.

The first batch of Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit, also known as kirin fruit, departed for China on April 10, with a total of over 2,800 cartons weighing around 7 metric tons. On April 18, Goodfarmer, leading Chinese fruit importer and the first company to bring Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit to Chinese consumers, held a launch ceremony for the product at Beijing’s Xinfadi wholesale market. The event was attended by the Ecuadorian Ambassador to China.

The total planting area of yellow dragon fruit in Ecuador exceeds 5,000 hectares, 3,600 hectares of which have obtained the necessary certification to export to China. To date, seven export companies, six packaging facilities and eight orchards in Ecuador have been officially permitted by China’s General Administration of Customs to deal with yellow dragon fruit exports to China.

While delivering over 11 metric tons of yellow dragon fruit to China in just two weeks is impressive, it is worth noting that the peak export season for the fruit has not yet arrived. As the production increases in June and July, a corresponding rise in export volume to China is expected.

According to the Central Bank of Ecuador, Ecuadorian fruit exports in the first two months of 2023 grew by 48.7% over the same period of last year owing to a combination of rising global fruit prices and increased demand. The export value also increased significantly, up by 92.5% to $49.6 million during the same period.
