Guangzhou’s Jiangnan Wholesale Market to be Relocated

Guangzhou’s Jiangnan Fruit & Vegetable Wholesale Market was established in 1994 and has now become the largest market of its kind in China, enjoying the biggest trade volumes in China among similar markets for the past 15 years. In 2018, Guanzhou’s Jiangnan market traded a total of 558 million tons of fruit and vegetable valued at USD 3.96 billion, representing an increase of 2.22% in volume and 1.94% in value over 2017. Moreover, the market has been the foremost trading center in China for imported fruits – any price fluctuations at Jiangnan have caused or influenced nationwide trends in the prices of imported fruit across China. 

According to an official announcement issued by the Guangzhou municipal government on December 27, 2018, twelve agricultural product wholesale markets in the city will be relocated in the coming years, which includes the Jiangnan Fruit & Vegetable Wholesale Market. It is reported that this relocation will facilitate a modernization of the Jiangnan market, including environmental enhancements, improved transport access, e-trading popularization, and general improvements to the market’s facilities, logistics and cold chain infrastructure.

On January 17, 2019, Jiangnan market’s chairman and general manager Ye Canjiang spoke to the upcoming relocation plan at an internal management meeting, noting that the Guangzhou municipal government had yet to communicate with Jiangnan on the matter and it was unlikely that a move would be completed within the next two years. Mr. Ye also encouraged the market’s management, dealers, and vendors to welcome the relocation plan as an opportunity to embrace innovation.
