First Peruvian Fruit Shipment From Chancay Port Arrives in Shanghai

December 24, 2024

On the morning of Dec. 18, the COSCO Shipping vessel Xin Shanghai reached Shanghai’s Yangshan Port, marking the arrival of the inaugural shipment of Peruvian fruit via the new Chancay–Shanghai direct shipping route.

This shipment consisted of over 20,000 metric tons of various fruits, including avocados, blueberries, mangos and table grapes. The opening of Chancay Port has reduced the sea transit time between China and Peru to just 23 days, down from the previous range of 33–43 days for other routes, lowering logistics costs by more than 20% and significantly benefiting the transportation of fresh produce and other perishable items.

The first phase of Chancay Port has been operational for just over one month and is progressing toward full capacity during its testing and adjustment stage. According to a report by Spanish-language news outlet El Economista, this stage aims to optimize efficiency, improve performance and fine-tune technical operations, which is expected to last until next May.

In addition to fruit, Xin Shanghai, which departed Peru in late November, also transported mineral goods to China. By early December, Chancay Port had successfully dispatched over 1,700 containers.

Starting this month, COSCO Shipping Group has launched a weekly direct route between Chancay and Shanghai. Chancay Port staff have held meetings with trade associations and potential customers from Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil, with the goal of having transshipment cargo from these countries account for 65% of the port’s throughput.

Additionally, Chile has been integrated into Chancay Port’s operations through services provided by two shipping companies. Ocean Network Express announced that from December it will launch a coastal shipping line from Chile to Peru as the first phase, along with feeder services departing from Chilean ports. COSCO Shipping Group has also revealed plans to introduce additional coastal routes to handle cargo from Chile.
