Air Shipments of Peruvian Table Grapes to China Now Possible

July 04, 2024

According to a report from Chilean media outlet Simfruit, the governments of China and Peru agreed to update the phytosanitary protocol for the export of Peruvian table grapes to China during a recent state visit by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte to China. Under the revised protocol, air shipments can now be used to send Peruvian grapes to the Chinese market.

In a statement, Peruvian Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Ángel Manero said that as one of the world’s leading exporters of table grapes, blueberries, avocados and mangos, Peru aims to continue promoting the entry of its products into the Chinese market. With significant support from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is also striving to ensure that various other agricultural products, including pork and beef, can secure access to the Chinese market in the medium term.

Manero believes that the newly permitted air shipments will complement the traditional transportation mode of sea shipments. Hence, the updated protocol will enable the export of very high-quality grapes to China, targeting a specific market segment that heavily values fruit freshness.

During President Boluarte’s state visit to China, the Peruvian government, in addition to initiating the preparation of protocols for exporting Peruvian beef and pork to China, expressed its willingness to promote the entry of fresh pomegranates and pecans into the Chinese market.

With respect to pomegranates, the Peruvian government stated that the report on cold treatment compiled by Peru’s National Agricultural Health Service had been reviewed and approved by the General Administration of Customs of China and the drafting of the phytosanitary protocol is about to begin. In regard to pecans, the GACC has unofficially indicated that it will send a delegation of technicians to Peru in the second week of July to review the production, harvesting and post-harvest management of pecans. This visit is expected to conclude the risk analysis phase, setting the stage for the signing of the phytosanitary protocol.
